Own a Piece of D4DPR History

As Doctors for Drug Policy Reform celebrates its 10th anniversary, we offer a limited number of hand-signed broadside prints of our 2016 “Declaration of Principles.”

The foundational document of what was then called Doctors for Cannabis Regulation, the Declaration makes a rational, evidence-based case for the legalization and regulation of cannabis. The fifty-six signers put their names to these principles “with firm reliance on science and reason,” and “with confidence in the judgment of history.” Their bold declaration continues to resonate today.

Eighty copies of this broadside — a large-format, single-sided print in the tradition of historical documents like the Declaration of Independence — were produced for the fourth anniversary of DFCR but never released because of the Covid pandemic.

Printed on thick, textured hemp paper in Caslon Pro typeface, each broadside features the original red and blue seal of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation, a printed list of all signers, and the handwritten signatures of two of our most prominent founding members: U.S. Surgeon General Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders and DFCR founder Dr. David L. Nathan.

Each print is also hand-signed, numbered, and dated on the reverse by Dr. Nathan. At 11”x 14”, the broadside fits a standard frame.

About the signers:

Dr. Elders was the first African American and second woman ever appointed U.S. Surgeon General — a sharecropper’s daughter from rural Arkansas who put herself through medical school and rose to the nation’s most powerful health pulpit under President Clinton. She championed sex education, drug policy reform, and harm reduction — principles that were decades ahead of her time and highly controversial. History has vindicated her on every position.

A Princeton-based psychiatrist, educator, and activist, Dr. Nathan is our organization’s founder. He was the author and graphic designer of this “Declaration of Principles.” A leader in the development of evidence-based labeling standards for the regulated cannabis
industry, he is the principal designer of the International Intoxicating Cannabinoid Product Symbol (ASTM D8441) that is now used in ten states.
